30th Anniversary Mac

The Mac arrived in 1984 so in 2 years it will be 30 years old. Apple already had a 20th Anniversary model, although it celebrated Apple's twentieth birthday not the Mac. However I would be happy to have a Mac showing us the future of computers.

My wish list

  • It should be a desktop. Yes, I know that now mobility is the trend, but the orignal Mac was a desktop and desktops are still important. People still spend a lot if time at their desk and desktops are made for working at the desk. They can offer larger screen, more power, large keyboard, permanent Internet connection and better design.  It should be an embellishment on your desk.
  • Internet ready. The trouble with desktops are that they still contain a lot of local data and applications. Seamless synchronization with your other devices (phone, tablet) would make desktops desirable again. You do some notes on your tablet, and then keep working on them without interruption on your desktop. In an ideal word even your HiFi, TV and radio (if you have any) are integrated.
  • Minimalist. Concentrating on the essentials makes hardware useful. I fancy a transparent glass case which makes the screen seam hovering in the air.
  • Low power. I would put a - high performance- ARM chip into the computer. Technically the machine  would rather be a powerful iPad with larger screen. Having a low power computer supports sustainability and calms our conscience.
  • Solar charger. To minimize power consumption I would add an (optional?) intelligent solar charger which can use ambient light (and maybe heat as well) to charge an integrated battery but also to switch on to socket power when needed. A tablet can run on a couple of watts with a very modest use, which is not far from the capacity of a smaller indoor solar charger. Design for a hybrid charger is a challenge but can be done.  Fine software would make this switch seamless but also help you work in an energy efficient mode; maybe similarly to modern hybrid cars:
  • Screen: Retina display is a must, and it should have a relative large size, and use an OLED display.
  • OS: it Must be a MacOs but look like an iOS also including the touch interface. I assume this is the direction MacOS will develop in the future.

Conclusion

Apple leads the market with innovation, however I think that desktops still have a lot of potential for vendors. It also provides an opportunity for the competitors. E.g. the vision above could also be easily realized with a computer designed about ChromeOS.
